We're Going Official: The 501(c)(3) Journey
By Ashley Schausten
Quick update, because a few of you have asked: yes, we're going official.
Calico Hearts started the way most rescues do — with one person, one spare room, and a stubborn refusal to say no. That worked, until it didn't. We've grown past what my living room can hold, and that means it's time to grow up the boring way too: paperwork.
We're working toward our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. In plain English, that means the IRS would recognize us as a legitimate tax-exempt charity. Here's why that matters:
- Donations become tax-deductible for the people who give. (We'll get you proper receipts — promise.)
- We can apply for grants that fund spay/neuter, medical bills, and emergency surgeries — the stuff that currently comes straight out of pocket.
- Vets, suppliers, and partners take us seriously, which means better rates and faster help when a kitten is sick.
- We can do more. More foster homes, more intakes, more of those 4 a.m. bathroom-floor saves.
It is, I'll be honest, a mountain of forms. There's state filing, federal filing, bylaws, a board, record-keeping systems, and a stack of fees I'd rather spend on kitten food. There are days it feels like I need a law degree to save a cat.
But every box I check is a door that opens for the next kitten.
No firm date yet, but we're moving — steadily, deliberately, and with a lot of help. Thank you for your patience while we grow up the unglamorous, necessary, paperwork-flavored kind of growing up.
