Building GV Cat Condos for Our Feral Neighbors
By Ashley Schausten
We're building something I'm really excited about, and I want to tell you about it.
Calico Hearts is putting together multiple sets of what we're calling GV Cat Condos — insulated, weatherproof little shelters designed for outdoor cats who don't have a warm couch to come inside to. We're donating them to feral cat colonies around Grand Junction, in partnership with our friends at Board & Nail, who are helping us build these sturdy enough to actually hold up to a western Colorado winter.
Now — a quick note, because we do this the right way or not at all: we only place condos where we've been given permission, either by the city or by the landowners where these colonies reside. We respect the property, we respect the people, and we work with the community, not around it. No surprise cat condos showing up where they're not wanted.
Here's the part I really want you to hear, because I know "feral colony" can sound like a problem to some folks. Feral cat colonies, when managed well, are actually a net positive for a community.
- They keep rodent populations in check — which matters more than you'd think in a valley full of barns, fields, and outbuildings.
- A managed, sterilized colony is stable. The cats don't reproduce out of control, they don't grow endlessly, and they hold their territory — which actually prevents new, unsterilized cats from moving in and starting the cycle over. It's called the vacuum effect, and it's real.
- They give these cats — who, through no fault of their own, were born outside and will live outside — a shot at a decent, humane life instead of a short, hard one.
These cats aren't going anywhere. The kinder, smarter, cheaper choice is to help them live well where they are.
And here's the part that makes this urgent: the forecasts for this coming winter are rough. Like, genuinely rough. We're talking sustained cold, serious snow, the kind of stretches that can be deadly for an animal with no shelter. A cat who's been getting by on a porch and stubbornness is not going to get by when the temps drop and stay dropped. A GV Cat Condo — insulated, dry, out of the wind — can genuinely be the difference between a colony making it to spring and not.
So we're building. Board & Nail is building with us. And we're getting these out to the colonies that need them before the weather turns, because the weather is not going to wait for us to be ready.
If you know of a colony that could use a condo — or if you're a landowner with a colony on your property and you'd like to talk about humane, managed support — reach out. We'd rather have that conversation than have cats suffer through a winter in silence.
Winter's coming. Let's make sure our feral neighbors have somewhere warm to wait it out.
